Island-style Japanese celebrations take spotlight
| |||
Take a deeper look at the ways that Hawaii's Japanese community celebrates various occasions — including New Year's, the obon festival and cherry blossom season — at
"Celebrate!: The Evolution of Japanese Celebration in Hawaii," an exhibit opening today and running through June 18 at the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawaii.
Told through historical photographs, videos, objects and art pieces, the exhibition covers traditional Japanese celebrations and how they evolved into local festivals and practices. It also looks at celebrations that take place over the course of one's life, from birth to graduation to yakudoshi; celebrations such as openings of businesses, temples and schools; and historical and political celebrations.
Gallery hours are 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Tuesdays-Saturdays. Kamaaina admission is $5 for adults; $3 for ages 6-17 and 70 and older, and students and active-duty military; 945-7633, www.jcch.com.
