Lawrence Chew pitched a gutsy complete game, but Justin Protacio and Tyler Yoshizawa stole the show.
The junior left-handed Chew pitched into jams in part to five walks and four errors, but escaped more harm with two double plays to help No. 4 Mid-Pacific beat No. 5 Punahou, 7-4, yesterday in Interscholastic League of Honolulu Division I second-round action at Ala Wai Field.
But it was Protacio's steal of third in the fourth inning — one of three for him yesterday — and a throwing error from the catcher with the game tied at 3 that scored the go-ahead run for the Owls (10-3 overall, 3-1 second round).
Yoshizawa cushioned MPI's 6-4 lead in the top of the seventh with a steal of home with runners at second and third with two outs against the Buffanblu (9-4-1, 4-2). Yoshizawa said he was waiting for Eldredge, who moved from catcher to pitcher in the sixth, to see if he would pitch from the stretch or windup.
"I took a chance and it paid off," Yoshizawa said. "I popped up (after the slide). I had to sell it."
Protacio's steal came after a bit of controversy. He led off with a single, took second on Nikolas Alarcio's sacrifice and remained there when Ryan Muraoka flied out to center. Marcus Doi's apparent ground single to right scored Protacio, but he was ordered back to second, as Doi was ruled to have reached on catcher's interference.
The umpire told the official scorer that there was a protest on the catcher's interference. According to National Federation rules, the batting team has the option of accepting the result of the play (the RBI single) or take the catcher's inference, which the ball is ruled dead and the runner returns to his base. But MPI wasn't awarded the option because the latter was enforced, so Doi lost out on a 3-for-3 day.
The ruling ended up irrelevant. With Dane Fujinaka at the plate, Protacio stole third on a 2-1 count and scored on the catcher's errant throw into left field.
"I just tried to get a good jump," Protacio said. "I had to try to make something happen."
While the Owls were able to hold off the Buffanblu with single runs in each of the last four innings, it was Chew who was able to hold the lead.
"My defense was good for me today," Chew said of his defense, despite four errors. "They made a couple of double plays for me. It was huge. I just tried to throw strikes out there, make them put the ball in play."
Chew threw 115 pitches, but retired the last five in a row after giving up an RBI single to Jeremy Ioane in the sixth that pulled Punahou to 6-4.
"I've been throwing over a hundred pitches for a long time," Chew said. "During (American) Legion in the summer, I'll throw a hundred pitches twice in one week. It's just conditioning. You just have to get in good shape."
Chew gave up four runs (two earned), six hits and struck out one in seven innings.
"He won't pitch for a while," MPI coach Dunn Muramaru said.
The Owls' defense didn't help matters, as three of their four errors accounted for two unearned runs. The Owls failed to execute when they trapped a runner between third and home on a safety squeeze in the second. A throwing error to double off a runner at first after a lineout to second put runners in scoring position to set up Rick Nomura's two-run single in the third that tied the game at 3.
