Wednesday is the deadline to enter the U.S. Open.

Hawai'i has local qualifiers at Hoakalei (May 9) on O'ahu, Wailua (May 15) on Kaua'i, King Kamehameha (May 16) on Maui and Waikoloa Kings' (May 17) on the Big Island.

Entries must be in by 11 a.m. Hawai'i time Wednesday. The number of local qualifiers could be reduced if too few enter.

All entries must be made online this year, at usga.org. May 5 is the deadline to enter the U.S. Women's Open. Hawai'i's sectional is May 30 at Hoakalei and 1988 U.S. Women's Open champion Liselotte Neumann has turned in her entry to play here. Neumann, from Sweden, has won 13 LPGA events and 13 more around the world.

The 65th U.S. Women's Open has only sectional qualifiers (no locals). Top finishers at each sectional — a number determined by how many play — advance directly to the Open. If too few play in Hawai'i, the sectional's future is in danger.

This year's U.S. Open is June 17 to 20 at Pebble Beach Golf Links in California. The women play July 8 to 11 at Oakmont Country Club in Pennsylvania.

JUNIORS PLAY FREE

Makai Golf Club at The St. Regis Princeville Resort will offer free golf for juniors. The announcement comes on the heels of Troon Golf's recent introduction of the Troon Family Golf program, which allows juniors to play free after 3 p.m. when playing with an adult at more than 60 Troon facilities across the United States.

The Makai Golf Club is taking the program a step further by offering free golf for juniors age 15 and under at any time, any day (no 3 p.m. restriction). Juniors age 16 and 17 receive half off green fees. Juniors can also use complimentary Callaway rental clubs.

To qualify, each junior player must be accompanied by a paying adult (one free junior per one paying adult). If one adult accompanies two or three juniors, one plays free and the other young players will be offered half off the adult rate.

Ko Olina Golf Club is launching a new program that will enlist amateur golfers to serve as ambassadors to introduce the game to their family and friends.

The "Share the Joy of Golf" Ambassador Program will recruit a core group of golfers to serve as ambassadors. Each will be able to bring three beginners each month for a free nine-hole golf experience. The ambassador's guests will receive a 10-minute lesson by one of Ko Olina's PGA professionals and free rental clubs and rental shoes. JUNIOR CHAMPS

Honolulu's Eimi Koga and Jino Sohn won their age groups at the final 14-under Junior Tour Series of the Spring, last weekend at Mililani Golf Club.

Koga shot rounds of 77-76, then beat Kaci Masuda (74-79) in a scorecard match for the Girls 14-under title. Sohn (71-77) won the Boys 14-under title by two over Jared Flores and Richard Hattori.

Other winners were: Taisei Negishi (Boys 11-12), Hana Furuichi (Girls 11-12), Len Yamada (Boys 10-under) and Malia Nam (Girls 10-under).

The next tournament will be the Callaway Hawai'i Junior World Qualifier, June 9 and 10 at Waikoloa Kings'.
