WAIPI'O — Robert Kahana threw a five-hitter with eight strikeouts and three walks, and Michael Memea drove in the go-ahead run with a sixth-inning double yesterday to help Campbell hold off Kailua, 4-3, and advance to its first O'ahu Interscholastic Association championship game since 1995.

The Sabers improved to 10-4 in league play and will face three-time defending champ Pearl City (14-0) in tonight's title game at Patsy Mink Central O'ahu Regional Park.

First pitch is set for about 7, or about half an hour after the 4 p.m. OIA White Conference championship game between Radford and Waipahu.

Both games will be televised live statewide on OC16.

Campbell's last title game appearance was in 1995, when current head coach Rory Pico was a standout shortstop for the Sabers.

"It feels good to break the string," said Kahana, a 6-foot-1, 180-pound right-handed junior. "Last year (Kailua) beat us in the semifinals, I think they were up, 8-0, in the first inning."

Yesterday at CORP, it was Campbell that started quickly, taking a 3-0 lead in the first inning after four hits and a hit batter. Kahana appeared to be cruising along through the first four innings, allowing only one hit with six strikeouts.

But the Surfriders (11-3) closed it to 3-2 in the fifth after doubles by Tyson Lono, Kory Sasaoka and Ryan McMonigle. They tied it in the sixth after Alan Baldwin hit a one-out double, advanced to third on Elia Lono's grounder and scored on a wild pitch.

The Sabers then answered in the bottom half when Jaren Maghamil led off with a single to left field, stole second and scored on Memea's one-out double to center.

Before the start of the bottom of the seventh, the game was delayed for 35 minutes to allow the sun to set out of the batters' vision.

"I was just throwing about 80 percent (strength) in the bullpen, I ran around," Kahana said, when asked what he did to stay warm. "I was still feeling the adrenaline."

Kailua threatened with two outs in the seventh, as McMonigle drew a 3-2 walk and advanced to second on an infield error. Jared Matsumoto — one of the Surfriders' top hitters — then drew a 3-0 count but flied out to deep left field on the next pitch, which Kahana said was a fastball down the middle.

"I gave him the green light," Kailua coach Corey Ishigo said. "He hit it well and if the ball went 10 feet either way, it's a double. I'll live and die with those guys, so I'm happy he swung."

Brothers Chevas and Chace Numata combined on a four-hitter and Jordan Oshiro broke a 2-2 tie with an RBI double in the bottom of the fourth inning to lift the Chargers at CORP.

Pearl City took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when Jordan Oshiro led off with a walk, advanced to third base on Tyler Tokunaga's double down the left-field line and scored on Chevas Numata's groundout.

Mililani (9-6) responded with two runs in the second, on Chad Tanaka's RBI triple into the right-field corner and Chad Uyehara's run-scoring groundout.

The Chargers then tied it in the bottom half, after Kahana Neal hit a leadoff single to left, adva[0xad]nced to second on a passed ball and scored on Royce Murai's single to center.

Pearl City took a 3-2 lead in the fourth after Murai slammed a one-out double and scored on Oshiro's double to left.

Chevas Numata, meanwhile, allowed only two hits until the sixth, when he allowed two one-out singles and was relieved by his brother.

The winner will earn a state tournament berth.

The Rams rallied for a run in the bottom of the seventh to defeat the Red Raiders yesterday in the O'ahu Interscholastic Association White tournament semifinals.

Rylee Moore pitched a complete game for the Rams (11-0), who will play Waipahu today at 4 p.m. at CORP for the championship.
