A 22-year-old Waipahu man was arrested after he allegedly tried to kidnap a 5-year-old girl about noon yesterday from Waipahu District Park.

Family members told police the man grabbed the girl and tried to walk away with her, but they intervened and were able to get the girl away from him.

Police said bystanders detained the man until patrol officers arrived at the park and arrested the man on suspicion of kidnapping.

The suspect lives on Kahuamoku Street, which is adjacent to the park.
