The state House and Senate voted today to set aside $67 million from the state's hurricane relief fund to reduce teacher furloughs.

The bill now goes to Gov. Linda Lingle for her consideration.

Lingle, who has the authority over whether to release the money, has said she would agree to use $57 million to reduce teacher furlough days next school year and has asked teachers to voluntarily work the three remaining furlough days this school year.

The teachers' union, however, has said teachers would not work for free because it is contrary to a supplemental agreement reached with the state school board to end furloughs.

Lawmakers urged the governor and educators to reach an understanding and make use of the money.
