People are warned to stay out of Pälolo Stream and the Ala Wai canal after about 2,700 gallons of untreated wastewater spilled yesterday into a storm drain that empties into Pälolo Stream, city officials said.
Warning signs were posted along Pälolo Stream from 2128 Pälolo Ave. to the canoe launch near McCully Street Bridge, and water samples will be taken.
A line clogged with construction debris caused a manhole to overflow in front of 2128 Pälolo Ave. yesterday morning, city officials said.
The officials said a construction company resurfacing Pälolo Avenue last week paved over all of the manholes and city crews had to break through the pavement to get to the manhole.
The discharge was reported at 11:04 a.m. and stopped flowing at 2:09 p.m. An estimated 2,700 gallons entered the stream from a storm drain several hundred feet away.

Crews from the city's Department of Environmental Services collected and redistributed approximately 4,000 gallons of untreated wastewater to a downstream manhole for treatment at Sand Island Wastewater Treatment Plant.
