H-1 commuters will get relief, but not for 2 years
Commuters who find themselves stuck in the daily traffic jams between Honolulu and Waikele will be getting some relief, but it won't come until 2012.
Tammy Mori, spokeswoman for the state Department of Transportation, said new lanes on the H-1 Freeway will increase traffic capacity by about 17 percent.
Construction on a 6.1-mile section of the $75 million project is scheduled to begin this summer.
A second phase will expand a 2.1 mile stretch of the highway.
Mori said both phases should be finished by mid-2012.
