Contractors work on Kalihi hillside where boulders fell
The Board of Water Supply said a geotechnical engineering firm has completed its field assessment of the hillside above the Kalihi Valley Homes housing project where two boulders fell on Jan. 22.
Five areas (three boulders and two rock overhangs) have been identified for remedial action.
Two separate contractors were brought in to expedite the work recommended by the geotechnical engineering firm, the Board of Water Supply said, and both contractors began staging their equipment in the area Thursday.
Royal Contracting on Friday began to break apart three boulders. The other contractor, Janod, used a helicopter to secure netting on two rock overhangs.
It is expected to take up to 16 days to finish all the recommended remedial work, weather permitting.
The two boulders that rolled down the hillside have been broken apart and removed by the contractor.
