Shorthanded Kapa'a tops Honoka'a

WAIPAHU — To return to the state championship game, Kapa'a will need to do so without its top striker.

Senior Dakota Barnett drew a red card in the 56th minute after colliding with Honoka'a goalkeeper Michelle Murakane in the Warriors' 2-1 quarterfinal win yesterday at the JN Automotive Group/Hawai'i High School Athletic Association Girls Soccer Division II State Championship at the Waipi'o Peninsula Soccer Complex.

Barnett sobbed behind the Kapa'a (9-0-0) bench after she was disqualified from the remainder of the game and today's 3 p.m. semifinal against defending champion Pac-Five (5-6-2), a rematch of last year's title game that Pac-Five won on penalty kicks.

"It just made us want it really bad because we got so close last year," said senior Seri Niimi-Burch, who scored to put Kapa'a up 2-0 at halftime. "We went out and played hard and lost one of our best strikers. But we just kept going and kept trying to play hard."

Even down a player, Honoka'a coach Jo Kim said Kapa'a was able to control possession of the ball and the midfield, much like it had the entire game. Murakane left the game after the collision but returned later.

The Dragons (11-6-0) broke through in the 72nd minute when Monica Carlos shot from about 15 yards into the top left corner of the goal. Honoka'a sent another ball toward the goal a minute later that was stopped.

"To play a team that's as quick and fast and strong and smart as Kapa'a, it can be only be beneficial for a team," Kim said.

Barnett scored in the 21st minute, taking the ball down the center, slipping past a defender and shooting in the 18-yard box into the top of the goal. Niimi-Burch scored in the 39th minute to make it 2-0. From about 15 yards out, Niimi-Burch's shot rolled from the right into the bottom left corner of the goal.

Kapa'a coach Colby Ayonon said he still has 11 strong players and the next few players aren't far behind.

"Our girls are pretty hungry and have some unfinished business in front of us," Ayonon said. "We're excited and we're glad to be part of the tournament again."
