A public memorial service for former Honolulu Mayor Frank Fasi will be held March 3 in the Honolulu Hale courtyard.

Fasi, 89, died Wednesday of natural causes. He was Honolulu mayor for 22 years, longer than anyone else.

Details of the service, including the time, have not yet been finalized, although there is expected to be a formal service followed by an extended visitation period. The burial is expected to be private.

Mayor Mufi Hannemann has ordered flags at all city buildings to be flown at half-staff through the conclusion of the memorial service to honor Fasi's memory.

Black bunting has been draped across the main entrance of Honolulu Hale to signify the city is in mourning.

"I'm happy to report that the Fasi family has taken me up on my offer to hold a memorial service for Mayor Fasi at Honolulu Hale," Hannemann said in a news release. "We want to provide a fitting tribute to Mayor Fasi, who left such a lasting imprint on our city. We're working closely with the Fasi 'ohana to make sure this memorial program meets with their wishes."

Fasi was mayor from 1968 to 1980, and again from 1984 to 1994.

He is credited with bringing TheBus to Honolulu, as well as the People's Open Market, satellite city halls, neighborhood boards and Summer Fun programs for children.

He was unsuccessful in four attempts to win election as Hawai'i governor.
