Rutgers suspended Hall of Fame women's basketball coach C. Vivian Stringer yesterday for one game for misusing practice players.

Stringer will miss the Scarlet Knights' game against Seton Hall tonight. She is third among women's coaches on the all-time victories list with 838 and was enshrined in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame last September.

Stringer violated an NCAA bylaw that states that managers may not participate as practice players with the institution's team if they are not eligible student-athletes.

"Accountability is a vital element of the Rutgers athletics family," the school's athletic director, Tim Pernetti, said in a statement. "We will always follow what is in accordance with athletic department and NCAA policy."

Associate head coach Carlene Mitchell will be the acting head coach against Seton Hall.

After nearly two decades of bitter squabbling, Roy Jones Jr. and Bernard Hopkins still can't share the same table.

Instead, the former champions appeared behind separate podiums yesterday with placards that had only their own names and likenesses.

The stage inside the Hard Rock Cafe in Times Square was set up to finalize their long-awaited rematch on April 3 at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas.

The 41-year-old Jones (54-6, 40 knockouts) beat the 45-year-old Hopkins (50-5-1, 32 KOs) when they fought in 1993, and for years they never were able to agree to terms on what would have been a lucrative rematch.

Gambling regulators say Nevada casinos won almost $6.9 million on this year's Super Bowl as bettors wagered $82.7 million on the NFL title game.

The Nevada Gaming Control Board said yesterday that the win was $179,000 more than sports books won last year, on $1.21 million more in bets.

The underdog New Orleans Saints beat the favored Indianapolis Colts, 31-17, in the Sunday game.
