LOS ANGELES — The late Michael Jackson has a prominent role in the revamped version of "We Are the World."

Lionel Richie, who wrote the original charity anthem with Jackson, says the King of Pop can be seen in the new video for the track, singing with his sister Janet.

"We left the original footage of that part, but now he is singing with his sister," Richie said.

"It's something we wanted to see, but his mother requested it, too, for Janet to sing with Michael," said Quincy Jones, who produced the original track and helped orchestrate the re-recording.

"We Are the World — 25 for Haiti" is set to make its debut today during coverage of the opening ceremony for the Winter Olympics. Proceeds from sales of the song will benefit earthquake recovery efforts in Haiti.

HOPPER'S WIFE WILL KEEP HER DISTANCE

LOS ANGELES — Dennis Hopper's wife has agreed to stay 10 feet away from the ailing actor and not contact him directly as they wrangle through their divorce, court records filed yesterday show.

The agreement came after the "Easy Rider" actor requested an emergency restraining order prohibiting contact with his wife of nearly 14 years. His petition claimed his wife, Victoria, has engaged in "outrageous conduct" in the past year and was accompanied by a doctor's declaration that his treatment for prostate cancer required him to eliminate unnecessary stress.

The filing cites several arguments between the couple over child visitation, issues at the compound where the couple and Dennis Hopper's adult children live, and other matters.

GABRIEL WILL MISS HALL OF FAME MOMENT

NEW YORK — When Genesis gets inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame next month, founding member Peter Gabriel won't be there.

Rock and Roll Hall of Fame president Joel Peresman said in a statement yesterday that Gabriel says he has a scheduling conflict with his tour that begins in Europe.

Along with Gabriel, the band's original lineup included Mike Rutherford, Tony Banks, Anthony Phillips and Steve Hackett. Phil Collins joined the band later and replaced Gabriel as lead vocalist in 1976.

BALDWIN IN HOSPITAL AFTER DAUGHTER'S CALL

NEW YORK — Emmy award-winning actor Alec Baldwin was taken to a hospital yesterday after his 14-year-old daughter called 911 saying he had threatened to take pills during an argument on the telephone, a law enforcement official said.

Baldwin's daughter, Ireland, told authorities that she was worried about her father after he said, "I'm tired of this. I'm going to take some pills. I'm going to end this," the official told The Associated Press, quoting from an official report on the matter.

Authorities came to the "30 Rock" star's Central Park West apartment after his daughter called 911 at about midnight yesterday, the official said. Baldwin, 51, was released from the hospital in an hour and took no alcohol or pills, spokesman Matthew Hiltzik said.
