If you've ever thought about running away to join the circus, here's your chance ... well, OK, just for a day.

"Circus! Science Under the Big Top," opening today at Bishop Museum, offers a ring full of attractions that use science to explore the wonders of the circus and the world of the circus to explore science.

So step right up and experience circus stunts firsthand. Here's what awaits — if you dare:

Walk the high wire: Strap into a harness and walk on a high wire suspended 8 feet off the ground. See how physics, biology and physiology play their part in learning the ropes.

Sword swallowing: Gulp! — explore anatomy in this sideshow exhibit thought to originate in India more than 2,000 years ago.

Contortion feats: Hidden secrets of amazing body benders. Can YOUR muscles squeeze you into this tiny box?

Aerodynamic acrobats: Safely practice flying through the air.

Dress up: Bring out your inner performer in the costume area.

Find out what circus animals are thinking. How much force does it take to bend a steel bar?

And there's more — visit 20 activity stations and explore the science behind the fun.

Today in keeping with the circus theme, an aerial acrobatic performance by Samadhi Hawai'i will be at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m.

Today only, the Bishop Museum has a special admission rate of $5 for kama'āina and military (with ID); children 3 and younger are free.
For all other visitors, regular admission is $17.95 adults; $14.95 for seniors 65 and older, ages 4-12; free for children 3 and younger.
