The University of Hawai'i softball team tapped into its power source last night, belting four home runs to pummel 10th-ranked Stanford, 11-5, in the championship game of the Oceanic Time Warner Paradise Classic at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.

Makani Duhaylonsod-Kaleimamahu and Alex Aguirre hit solo homers, Traci Yoshikawa added a two-run blast and Kanani Puu-Warren capped a five-run top of the seventh with a three-run shot.

Aguirre, Amanda Taualii and Kelly Majam each had three hits for the Rainbow Wahine (3-2), who lost to Stanford (4-1) and pitching ace Ashley Chinn, 2-0, Friday.

Yesterday, Chinn allowed 10 hits and seven runs before being replaced in the seventh.

Earlier in the day, freshman Kaia Parnaby pitched a five-hitter and four 'Bows homered in a 5-2 victory over McNeese State.

Parnaby (2-0) gave up two unearned runs while striking out eight and walking one.

Katie Grimes hit a two-run homer, and Taualii, Melissa Gonzalez and Duhaylonsod-Kaleimamahu each hit solo shots.

BASEBALL

HPU SWEEPS UHH

Bas Nooji and Kenny Turner hit RBI singles in the top of the ninth and reliever Sergio Contreras struck out the final two batters with two runners on in the bottom of the inning as Hawai'i Pacific beat host Hawai'i-Hilo, 4-2, last night to complete a season-opening Pacific West Conference baseball sweep.

In the first game, Turner had three hits, including a pair of RBI singles, and Blake Amaral hit a two-run triple as HPU won, 8-1.

Michael Greene spaced nine hits in working the seven-inning complete game. He struck out six and did not issue a walk.

BOXING

ESCALANTE EARNS DRAW

Waimānalo's Bruno Escalante Jr. fought to a draw in his professional boxing debut last night at Las Vegas.

Escalante and Japan's Takashi Okada battled to a four-round draw in a flyweight (112 pounds) bout on the undercard of the Pinoy Power/Latin Fury card at the Las Vegas Hilton.

Escalante, 20, accepted Okada as an opponent earlier in the week after his original opponent failed to make the weight. Okada is 1-0-1.

APINE LEAPS TO UH MARK

Hawai'i sophomore Madara Apine set a school indoor triple jump record with a leap of 40 feet, 1.5 inches yesterday at the Husky Classic in Seattle, Wash.

Apine finished sixth in easily surpassing the previous UH best of 39-9.24 set by Mallory Gilbert in 2008.

In another UH highlight, Samantha Balentine won her high jump section and tied for fifth overall with 5-7.75.
