Idaho rallied at the Rainbow Wahine's expense yesterday, defeating Hawai'i, 74-59, to erase the sting of its worst loss since joining the Western Athletic Conference.
The Vandals (6-17, 4-6 WAC) bounced back from a 47-point loss to WAC leader Fresno State in their last game. Yinka Olorunnife's double-double (25 points, 14 rebounds) helped Idaho to its second win in six games. Rachele Kloke added 19 points. Leilani Galdones had 19 for Hawai'i, going 5 of 9 from 3-point range.
The Rainbows (9-15, 3-8) have lost five of their last six. They play at Nevada tomorrow and finish this trip at San Jose State Wednesday.
The difference yesterday, at Cowan Spectrum in Moscow, came at the foul line, where the Vandals outscored the 'Bows 22-2. Hawai'i committed 22 fouls to Idaho's 10.
"That is a skewed statistic," UH coach Dana Takahara-Dias said. "We have no excuses. We were unable to get into any kind of rhythm.
"We were trying to emphasize minimizing fouls so they didn't go to the free-throw line. The second thing was rebounding and we had a very disappointing night on the boards, giving up 21 offensive rebounds."
Still, the 'Bows scored the first nine points of the second half to take their first lead, and go up 34-29. Idaho answered with a 21-5 run and UH couldn't get closer than eight.
"Every loss is hard," Takahara said. "Some losses are harder to take when you don't play well. Against Fresno State and New Mexico State we played well enough to win at the end. That's a lot more palatable to take than the loss today, when we didn't give ourselves a chance to win. We were not a contender tonight. That's a tribute to Idaho and its game plan."
