A mother and daughter in inflatable kayaks were rescued off the Big Island yesterday after wind conditions made it impossible for them to return to shore, Hawaii County firefighters said.
Firefighters were called after a person with a kayak attempted to help the 57-year-old woman and her 13-year-old daughter, who were caught in a wind line about a half-mile from shore at Mahukona State Park.
Firefighters used a helicopter to deploy a rescue swimmer and lowered a rescue net.
The mother and daughter were brought to Lapakahi State Park uninjured.
