Two in inflatable kayaks, stuck offshore, are rescued
A mother and daughter in inflatable kayaks were rescued in waters off the Big Island yesterday after wind conditions made it impossible for them to return to shore, Hawai'i County firefighters said.
Firefighters were called after a bystander with a a kayak attempted to help the 57-year-old woman and her 13-year-old daughter, who were caught in a wind line about a half-mile from shore at Mähukona State Park, firefighters said.
The mother and daughter were fatigued from trying to reach shore at 2:57 p.m.
Firefighters used a helicopter to deploy a rescue swimmer and lowered a rescue net. Both were brought to Lapakahi State Park uninjured and taken back to Mähukona State Park.
