A man wanted by police for a September theft at a Hilo supermarket is in federal custody in Oregon, accused of bank robbery, the Hawaii Tribune-Herald reported.

Police last week issued a statement saying that Michael Foley-Long, 34, was wanted for questioning in a second-degree theft investigation. Lt. Mitch Kanehailua of the Hilo Criminal Investigation Section said Foley-Long attempted to steal about $500 worth of groceries on Sept. 18 from the Sack n Save store in the Puainako Town Center.

"Apparently he filled a shopping cart full of groceries and tried to walk out with it," Kanehailua said.

Kanehailua said a store employee attempted to stop Foley-Long in the parking lot.

"Apparently ... he jumped into a pickup truck and drove off, nearly striking the guy," Kanehailua said.

Police are also investigating a possible reckless endangering charge against Foley-Long. Kanehailua said Foley-Long was not arrested at the time, but the store employee took down the license plate number of the pickup, which was registered to Foley-Long, and later identified him from a photograph.

According to The Oregonian newspaper, Foley-Long gave police in East Portland the name Michael Kirk Foley Jr. when arrested Feb. 4, minutes after a 3:35 p.m. robbery at the Key Bank's Gateway branch. His age was listed as 35.
