Two water main breaks affected campers at Sand Island Recreation Area and customers on the North Shore yesterday.

Businesses and residents from Pūpūkea to Turtle Bay were asked to continue conserving water yesterday afternoon while the Board of Water Supply refilled storage reservoirs depleted by a broken pipe.

The break occurred in front of Hale'iwa Beach Park about 11:35 Thursday night. Crews completed repairs to a break in a 16-inch water main by 1:30 p.m., but repairs to Kamehameha Highway continued into the evening. One lane was opened at 10:30 a.m. yesterday.

"It was an unusually slow Friday for us but we had water so that's good," said Joe Lazar, owner of Haleiwa Joe's restaurant, who praised the water company for its speedy work.

Meanwhile, the state Department of Land and Natural Resources closed Sand Island State Recreation Area yesterday after a 16-inch water main outside the park broke. The water main serves the park comfort stations, showers and irrigation system.

DLNR said people with camping permits for the weekend will be notified and may camp at other state parks or seek a refund of their permit fee.

The Division of State Parks hopes to reopen the park this morning.
