UH softball wins two in Desert

Kelly Majam and Amanda Tauali'i each homered and drove in three runs as the University of Hawai'i Rainbow Wahine rallied for an 11-8 victory over Utah yesterday at the 2010 Louisville-Slugger Desert Classic in Las Vegas.
Jenna Rodriguez also homered and had two RBIs in support of Stephanie Ricketts (2-2), who gave up eight runs and 10 hits in going the distance for UH. The Utes (5-2) led 8-7 before UH rallied with four runs in the bottom of the fifth.
In the second game, Kaia Parnaby (3-0) tossed a four-hitter, Melissa Gonzales and Alexandra Aguirre each hit two homers and Rodriguez hit one to power the Rainbows to a 11-0 victory over host UNLV (6-2).
UH improved to 5-2 with the two victories.

Grand Canyon sweeps UHH: Kelli Bridges homered and drove in six runs as Grand Canyon routed Hawai'i-Hilo 15-3 in five innings to complete a doubleheader sweep yesterday in Phoenix, Ariz. In the first game, Amy Searcy (5-1) pitched a two-hitter as the Antelopes won 2-0. Grand Canyon improved to 10-1 overall and 3-1 in the PacWest Conference. UHH fell to 5-4, 1-3.
Simon Fraser sweeps BYUH: Simon Fraser defeated Brigham Young-Hawai'i 13-1 and 9-0 yesterday in a softball doubleheader at BYUH's field in Lā'ie. Both games were shortened to five innings. The Clan, ranked No. 9 in the NAIA, improved to 2-0. The Seasiders fell to 0-6.
BASEBALL
HPU pounds Pacific 16-5: Bas Nooij hit a three-run homer, Kale Sumner homered and drove in three runs, and Blake Amaral had three RBIs as Hawai'i Pacific spoiled Pacific University's opener with a 16-5 rout yesterday at Hans L'Orange Park.
Caelen O'Meara (1-0) gave up two runs and six hits in six innings to earn the victory with help from two relievers as the Sea Warriors improved to 6-1.
GOLF
Fujikawa tied for 29th: Hawai'i's Tadd Fujikawa shot a 1-over 73 yesterday and was tied for 29th in the third round of the weather-delayed eGolf Professional Tour's season-opening Palmetto Hall Championship at Hilton Head Island, S.C.
The Moanalua High grad is at 1-over 217. Thirty-six players were unable to finish the round, which will be completed this morning with the final round to follow.
Andy Bare of North Carolina shot a 69 and was the clubhouse leader at 3-under 213. Canadian Matt McQuillan, the second-round leader at 9-under, did not start his third round yesterday.
Wie struggles in third round: Hawai'i's Michelle Wie bogeyed three of her last four holes for a 2-over 74 today to fall into a tie for 26th place after three rounds of the Honda PTT LPGA Thailand event at Chonburi, Thailand.
After starting the day with nine consecutive pars, Wie made two birdies and four bogeys on the back nine. She has a 54-hole total of 2-under 214.
Suzann Pettersen, the second-round leader at 130, was 2 under for the day and 16 under overall through 15 holes with a four-stroke lead in the 59-player field when this edition went to press.
