Hilo-based disc jockey Jacqueline Rossetti, aka The Honolulu Skylark, has become a grandmother again — twice — within a month. So she trekked to San Francisco to see her daughter, Kilohana, who gave birth to a 9-pound prince named 'Iolani. This, after son Imaka's wife, Lei, welcomed a wee princess named Kahena. ...
It was all in the 'ohana at The Mākaha Sons recent show at Hilo's Palace Theatre. Jerome Koko's daughter, Keolo, did her exquisite hula; John Koko's son, Shadow, earned howls of approval when he danced "Miloli'i" and "Tewetewe," Louis "Moon" Kauakahi's Japanese bride of a year and half, Nohea, danced to a tune he composed expressly for her. Waimea resident Penny Vredenburg (Honolulans remember her as Penny Keli'i) emceed. ...
When Lance Rae took in the "Hair" revival on Broadway to see his pal, Jackie Burns, in the role of Sylvia, he wound up sitting next to "Hair" director Diane Paulus, who pulled him onstage for the post-show audience-participation "Let the Sunshine In" curtain call romp. Now Rae can say he played on Broadway, and it won't be a fib. ...

That Maui Celebrity Series, a monthly show hosted by Brian Evans, will sashay from its smaller 700-seat Maui Theatre venue in Lahaina to the larger 1,200-seat Maui Arts & Cultural Center, depending on need, and Harrah's Casino Entertainment (where Evans just performed) succeeds The Hard Rock Caf as presenting sponsor in March. The next show features comedian Paul Rodrigues 9 p.m. March 21 at Maui Theatre. David Spade will the be April guest. ...
Maestro Michael Ching, artist and general director of Opera Memphis last here to conduct the Hawaii Opera Theatre's "Carmen," has agreed to replace Mark Flint, who had to bow out for personal reasons, in the "La Boheme" pit this Friday and Feb. 28 and March 2 at Blaisdell Concert Hall. THE LOCAL ANGLE: Singer Jimmy Borges returned to the roots of his fame — San Francisco, where Steve Parker and Shirley MacLaine's people "discovered" him at the legendary Forbidden City club, then took him to Las Vegas — because he has a 25-page slot, with photos, in the commemorative book, "Forbidden City: The Golden Age of Chinese Nightclubs" by Trina Robbins. "Forbidden City was very much like the Cotton Club in Harlem, except it was for Asians, Hawaiians, Filipinos and anyone who could pass for Asians," said Borges. The alumni included Jack Soo, Mai Tai Sing, Anna Lea and Pat Morita, all with some Island ties. TIGER TALK: Kristian Lei, the Island actress, has been playing Princess Nala in "The Festival of The Lion King" show at Hong Kong Disneyland for nearly six months now. Amid a culturally mixed cast, Lei has been learning Tagalog from her Filipino peers, Zulu from her African castmates, and Cantonese from the native Chinese. "I am blessed," she said, as she celebrated Chinese New Year and the launching of the Year of the Tiger. "Wong tsoi sau sau (good fortune); I experience something new each day." ...
