'A Perfect Day' gets new life on Olympics

Advertiser Staff

Dedicated watchers of TV Winter Olympics coverage are finding themselves humming a particular tune: Not the triumphant horns of the Olympics theme music but the rather sadder but more sweet sound track of one of the most ubiquitous commercials on the broadcast: AT&T’s “Perfect Day.”

Snow boarder Gretchen Bleiler, all in white and looking transported, floats from the earth’s ski slopes to the seas of the moon while a haunting voice intones slowly, “It’s such a perfect day/I’m glad I spent it with you. . .”
What IS that song? It’s singer-songwriter Lou Reed’s 1972 recording from his second solo album, “Transformer,” made after he left the popular 1970s glam group Velvet Underground. You heard it in the 1996 movie “Trainspotting.” Duran Duran covered it in 1995 in a cut that went to No. 28 on the UK Singles Chart. And in 2003, Reed re-recorded it for “The Raven.”
