'A Perfect Day' gets new life on Olympics

Dedicated watchers of TV Winter Olympics coverage are finding themselves humming a particular tune: Not the triumphant horns of the Olympics theme music but the rather sadder but more sweet sound track of one of the most ubiquitous commercials on the broadcast: AT&T�s �Perfect Day.�
Snow boarder Gretchen Bleiler, all in white and looking transported, floats from the earth�s ski slopes to the seas of the moon while a haunting voice intones slowly, �It�s such a perfect day/I�m glad I spent it with you. . .�
What IS that song? It�s singer-songwriter Lou Reed�s 1972 recording from his second solo album, �Transformer,� made after he left the popular 1970s glam group Velvet Underground. You heard it in the 1996 movie �Trainspotting.� Duran Duran covered it in 1995 in a cut that went to No. 28 on the UK Singles Chart. And in 2003, Reed re-recorded it for �The Raven.�
