Small quake under ocean barely a quiver on Big Isle

Advertiser Staff

A small earthquake was recorded yesterday morning south-southeast of the Big Island.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake had a preliminary measured magnitude of 3.4, making it one of the smallest temblors generally felt by people.

Hawai'i County Civil Defense said the quake was not strong enough to cause a tsunami.

Scientists say the earthquake occurred 30 miles from Hilo and 12 miles from Leilani Estates, at a depth of 27.5 miles.
