Visitor arrivals and spending both rose in January the state said today in the second positive report on the tourism industry in as many days.

Arrivals totaled 532,737 for the month, a 2 percent increase over the same month in 2009, the Hawaii Tourism Authority reported.
Visitors who arrived by air spent $983 million, 3.5 percent more than they did a a year earlier. Visitor spending also rose in December. It was the first back-to-back monthly increase in visitor spending since the industry downturn began in the spring of 2008, according to the HTA report.
Today’s report comes on the heels of an HTA report yesterday showing that airlines plan to increase the amount of passenger seats by nearly 6 percent this spring.
