Aquaculture companies at the Big Island's Natural Energy Lab of Hawai'i Authority business park are starting a "fish farmers market" to sell their products directly to consumers.
The venture will feature products including lobster, abalone, dungeness crab, Kona Kampachi, sturgeon, sea salt, microalgae and bottled desalinated deep seawater. Fish available for sale will include whole fish, fillets and sashimi plates.
The first market is scheduled from 2 to 6 p.m. March 26 at the business park's Gateway Center, and it will debut with live music, a farmer presentation and a demonstration by local private chef Faith Ogawa.
Three other market events are planned for this year and are scheduled for the last Friday in April, May and June.
The Hawai'i County Department of Research and Development is sponsoring the markets. The nonprofit group Friends of NELHA also is supporting the endeavor.
"The Big Island hosts some of the most innovative, sustainable aquaculture operations in the country," Guy Toyama, executive director of Friends of NELHA, said in a statement.
"Now, Big Island residents and visitors can purchase — fresh from the farms — locally grown, premium seafood, which has been proudly featured in some of the finest restaurants in Hawai'i and the Mainland."
