A popular scenic spot at Wailua River State Park that overlooks the ocean and the river’s mouth had drawn an estimated 50 cars by 8 a.m. Most of the people were tourists from Kapaa hotels.
They said they had been told by their hotels to evacuate and call back around 1 p.m. They went driving looking for higher ground and wound up at the park.
Charles and Lauren Rachwitz of Michigan said they were awakened at 4 a.m. by a phone call from their daughter on the Mainland.
Kauai resident Dawn Fukushima, who lives in Wailua Homesteads, said she came down to see what she could see.
She got up early with plans to go hunting, but instead got gas, water and nonperisnables and went to the overlook. Sitting on the back of her pickup truck were oranges, water and beer for anyone who needed refreshments.
Meanwhile in Lihue, people were coming out of Wal-Mart with rice, saimin and toilet paper.
