Reminder issued on keeping distance from humpbacks

Advertiser Staff

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is reminding ocean users about a federal law that requires people to stay at least 100 yards away from humpback whales.

The whale season in Hawai'i is under way until May, so NOAA reannounced its approach regulations, which include rules requiring all aircraft to stay at least 1,000 feet from the endangered sea creatures, the Maui News reported.

The humpback whale season in Hawai'i attracts as many as 10,000 whales that make the trip from Alaskan waters to give birth and mate.

In the past two years, NOAA has reported 12 violations of approach-zone regulations.
