HILO — Hawaii County registered its first traffic fatality of the new year in the early morning hours of 2010.
Police say 28-year-old Darcy Aguil of Pahala died Friday after a single-car crash on Pikake Street.
Police said Aguil was traveling south at a high rate of speed when he lost control of a 1994 Nissan sedan just before midnight. The car struck a parked vehicle and Aguil, who was not wearing a seat belt, was ejected.
Aguil was taken to Kau Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 3:43 a.m.
Police believe speed and alcohol were factors in the crash and have ordered an autopsy.
Police ask that anyone with information about this crash call Officer Joshua Lewis at 326-4646, extension 229.
There were no traffic fatalities on the Big Island at this time last year.
