Deputy sheriff to face sexual assault charges
A state deputy sheriff accused of repeatedly raping an elementary school girl in the 1990s is to be arraigned Monday in Circuit Court on four counts of first-degree sexual assault.
Edwin Salinda was arrested Tuesday by fellow deputy sheriffs after being indicted Dec. 16. He was initially arrested Nov. 9.
Honolulu police opened an investigation in October after the alleged victim, now 23, came forward. She told authorities Salinda began sexually assaulting her when she was 6 or 7 years old.
Department of Public Safety Deputy Director of Law Enforcement James Propotnick said Salinda has been a deputy sheriff for 19 years.
The Salinda, 55, was placed on leave without pay, pending the outcome of the case.
