Driver seeks lower bail to get into jail programs

A Maui woman facing a manslaughter charge for a fatal traffic collision in 2007 is asking that her bail be reduced so she can participate in programs while in jail, the Maui News reported.
Brittney Mooney, 26, is being held in lieu of $30,000 bail at Maui Community Correctional Center while awaiting trial.
She has pleaded not guilty to the charge stemming from a June 3, 2007, head-on crash near Ukumehame Wayside Park that killed 8-year-old Will Smith of San Antonio.
The boy was a front-seat passenger in a Wailuku-bound Chevrolet Malibu rental car driven by his mother, Susan Moulton. The car was hit head-on by a Lahaina-bound 2003 Mazda sedan, driven by Mooney, that crossed the center line, police said.
If her bail were to be set less than $25,000, Mooney still would not be able to post the amount to be released but would be allowed to take advantage of therapy and counseling at the Wailuku jail, Deputy Public Defender William "Pili" McGrath said in court Wednesday.
