A hiker fell to his death on the Makua side of Makaha Valley in the Waiçanae Mountains while trying to retrieve equipment he had lost during a hike earlier in the week, according to Honolulu Fire Department spokesperson Capt. Robert Main.
The hiker and another man, both in their late 20s or early 30s, made their way to the site where the equipment had fallen off a ledge. The hiker apparently fell as he attempted to rappel down the ledge while his companion stayed on the trail, Main said.
Fire rescue crews located the body of the hiker. Operations to retrieve the body will begin at first light on Monday, Main said.
An HFD helicopter transported the second man off the trail.
