MADISON, Wis. — Jordan Taylor had a rocky start replacing Trevon Hughes.

The backup point guard committed two turnovers and missed a jumper immediately after Hughes picked up two quick fouls, but he got better in a hurry to help Wisconsin hand Purdue its first loss this season.

Taylor scored a career-high 23 points, Jason Bohannon tied a career high with 20 and No. 17 Wisconsin beat No. 4 Purdue, 73-66, yesterday afternoon.

Taylor, a sophomore who has provided the Badgers a big lift on offense, went 7 of 11 from the field and 8 of 11 from the free-throw line.

"As much as they pressured us, it's not that difficult to get in the lane, but as well as they help, it's more difficult when you get in the lane to make your decision, make the right decision," Taylor said. "I made some bad decisions at the beginning, but I just tried to keep getting better throughout the game."

Purdue's 14-0 start tied the best in school history, but both the 1993-94 squad led by Glenn Robinson and this year's had their streaks end in Madison.

With former coach Gene Keady watching from behind the bench, Matt Painter's Boilermakers (14-1, 2-1 Big Ten) trailed most of the game.

"It's bothersome," Painter said. "We didn't put ourselves in position to win even though we made it a little bit closer at the end. We simply didn't make it a basketball game until the very end."

E'Twaun Moore had 24 points and Robbie Hummel added 13, but it wasn't nearly enough to overcome the Boilermakers' woes from 3-point range (3 of 10) and the free-throw line (13 of 24).

"It's frustrating that we lost. It's not frustrating that we're not 15-0," Hummel said. "This game was frustrating."

Wisconsin (13-3, 3-1) beat a top 10 team in Madison for the second time this season and improved to 130-10 at home in coach Bo Ryan's nine seasons. Purdue had been one of the only teams to give Wisconsin headaches. The Boilermakers had won four straight in the series and an unheard of two in a row in Madison.

"I believe in our guys. They'll go toe-to-toe with anybody, anytime," Ryan said. "We beat a good team, we beat a very good team."

No visitor has ever won three in a row in the nearly 12-year history of the Kohl Center, and Wisconsin, which saw its six-game winning streak snapped Wednesday night in a 54-47 loss to No. 10 Michigan State, took control in the opening minutes of the second half.

Tyler Haws scored 20 points to help the visiting Cougars (16-1) hold off the Miners (10-4). The Miners led early, but BYU took the lead for good, 31-30, on Jonathan Tavernari's 3-pointer with 1:26 left in the first half.

Kyle Gibson scored 28 points to help the visiting Bulldogs (15-2, 3-0 Western Athletic Conference) rally past the Vandals (8-6, 1-2) for their eighth straight victory.

With about 11 minutes left in the game, Staffan Johnson hit a 3-pointer to give Idaho a 56-48 lead. Trailing 56-52, Magnum Rolle, who was held to eight points, hit a short jumper that sparked a 13-0 run to put the Bulldogs ahead for good.

NEW MEXICO STATE 88, BOISE STATE 85

Jonathan Gibson scored 26 points to lead the visiting Aggies (9-7, 2-1 WAC) over the Broncos (9-7, 0-3) for their sixth victory in seven games.

Gibson connected on four 3-pointers, including one from the left baseline with a minute left, to put New Mexico State ahead to stay. Boise State had a chance to force overtime but missed three 3-pointers in the final 17 seconds.

NEVADA 96, SAN JOSE STATE 67

Armon Johnson had 23 points, Luke Babbitt 20 points and 10 rebounds, and Brandon Fields added 19 points as the host Wolf Pack (10-6, 2-1 WAC) never trailed in cruising past the Spartans (8-6, 1-1).

Adrian Oliver had 20 points and C.J. Webster 15 for the Spartans, who closed to 60-50 with 14:45 left in the game. But the Wolf Pack answered with a 15-6 run over the next six minutes to put the game away.

BYU-HAWAI'I 69, GRAND CANYON 64

Margues Whippy had 18 points and 12 rebounds, and scored on a layup with 11:31 to play and the visiting Seasiders (7-4, 4-1 PacWest) never trailed again in beating the Antelopes (6-12, 0-2) in a Pacific West Conference game at Phoenix.

A.J. Reilly scored 14 points, and J.R. Buensuceso and Gary Satterwhite each added 10 for BYUH, which trailed by 13 in the first half. Brad Carroll scored 16 points to lead Grand Canyon.

DIXIE STATE 82, CHAMINADE 71

Donovan Plunkett scored 19 points to lead three teammates in double figures as the host Red Storm (8-3, 2-0 PacWest) defeated the Silverswords (4-7, 1-1) at St. George, Utah.

Tom Whitehead added 18 points, Andy Palmer had 15, and Adam Ross 10 for Dixie, which led 44-30 at intermission. Steven Bennett scored 20 and Dominique Cooks had 12 for Chaminade, which went 1-1 on its road trip.

HAWAI'I-HILO 68, DOMINICAN 65

Bryan Ngo scored 23 points, Justin Smith had 18 and Lavell Shipman 11, helping the visiting Vulcans (9-4, 3-0 PacWest) hold off the Penguins (3-10, 0-2) at San Rafael, Calif.

Austin Bryan scored 17 points and Alex Ward had 16 for the Penguins. The game was tied at 35-all at halftime .

HAWAI'I PACIFIC 82, NOTRE DAME DE NAMUR 47

Norman Wells scored 25 points, including the first ten, and C.J Jackson added 12 points, 14 rebounds and five blocks as the visiting Sea Warriors (11-3, 3-0) rolled past the Argos (2-11, 0-2) at Belmont, Calif.

The Sea Warriors built a big lead early and never looked back, taking a 37-23 lead at halftime. An 18-0 second-half run put the game out of reach. Nick Storment led the Argos with 12 points.
