An elderly woman died this morning after being struck by a vehicle on Pali Highway.
The medical examiner's office tonight identified the victim as Hideno Matsumoto, 81, of Honolulu.
Bryan Cheplic of the city's Emergency Services Department said the accident happened shortly before 9 a.m. on Pali Highway near Dowsett Street.
Matsumoto was taken to The Queen's Medical Center in critical condition and pronounced dead shortly after.
Police closed Pali Highway town-bound for about two hours while they conducted an investigation.
The highway was reopened shortly after 11 a.m.
Police at first tried to divert Pali Highway traffic onto side streets, but the streets were not able to accommodate the number of cars. Police then closed Pali Highway town-bound from Castle Junction.
Police said Matsumoto, who lives on Puiwa Street, was crossing Pali Highway in a diamondhead to ewa direction. She was in a crosswalk in the first town-bound lane when she was struck by a Lexus sport utility vehicle and thrown about 30 feet.
There is no traffic light at the crosswalk.
Police said they do not believe speed or alcohol were factors in the accident.
Police said this was Oahu's third traffic fatality of the year. Two have involved pedestrians.
