Malia Manuel of Kaua'i and Alessa Quizon of Wai'anae advanced to the quarterfinals of the women's division of the Billabong ASP World Junior Championships surfing contest yesterday in Australia.

The second day of the contest was completed in 1- to 3-foot waves at North Narrabeen, Sydney, Australia.

Quizon, 16, was the standout in the women's draw yesterday, scoring an upset win over Kaua'i's Bethany Hamilton in the third round.

Quizon eliminated Hamilton, 14.67-11.07. The two-wave score of 14.67 was the highest total in the third round of the women's competition.

Hamilton, 19, finished runner-up at last year's World Junior Championships, and was the No. 2 seed this year.

Manuel defeated South Africa's Sarah Baum, 14.34-11.34, in the third round. Earlier in the contest, Manuel, 16, had the best score of the first round.

Manuel and Quizon are scheduled to surf against each other in the quarterfinals. They are the only Hawai'i surfers remaining in the women's field.

Leila Hurst of Kaua'i was eliminated in the third round by France's Joanne Defay.

The men's division completed just its first round, so there were no eliminations.

Hawai'i surfers Tonino Benson, Kiron Jabour, Granger Larsen, Keanu Asing, Albee Layer and Clay Marzo advanced to the second round, where eliminations begin.

The contest is considered the world championship for surfers age 20 and younger. Only 66 surfers — 48 in the men's division and 18 in the women's division — from around the world qualify for the event.

Maui's Kai Barger won the men's title last year, but opted not to enter this year.

HPU DUO IN CHALLENGER

Nikola Petrov and Daniel Luedi defeated Jeffery Fitch and Daniel Llarenas, 7-6 (6), 7-6 (4), yesterday to earn a doubles wild-card entry into the Honolulu Challenger.

The match, suspended by rain Sunday, was completed yesterday at the University of Hawai'i.

Petrov and Luedi, Hawai'i Pacific University's top doubles team, join the field of rising professional tennis players at the Challenger, Jan. 24-31, at Patsy T. Mink Central O'ahu Regional Park.

Fellow HPU player Hendrik Bode earned a singles berth into the tournament Sunday.

Fitch and Llarenas are UH teammates.
