Farrington girls forfeit tonight's basketball game against Roosevelt

Advertiser Staff

Farrington forfeited tonight's Oahu Interscholastic Association girls basketball showdown with Roosevelt as self-imposed punishment for a postgame scuffle last night at Castle, Farrington athletic director Harold Tanaka said.

The game was to feature the OIA Red Conference Eastern Division's top two teams; both are now tied for first place at 10-1.

The Governors defeated Castle, 65-50, last night, but a two-player scuffle during the postgame handshakes resulted in a Castle player being struck in the mouth, drawing blood. Tanaka said an initial investigation last night was inconclusive due to conflicting eyewitness reports, but this morning Farrington coach Caroline Tatupu suspended the player involved and then decided to forfeit the game "to send a message to the girls," Tanaka said.

The Govs also forfeited the 5 p.m. JV game.
