STORRS, Conn. — Connecticut got off to a near-perfect start, showing there is a chasm between it and the rest of women's basketball.

Tina Charles scored 23 points and grabbed 13 rebounds to help the top-ranked Huskies rout No. 3 Notre Dame, 70-46, last night for its 56th straight victory.

UConn scored 24 of the game's first 28 points to take control, delivering an early knockout.

"That first 15 minutes of basketball was pretty amazing," Connecticut coach Geno Auriemma said. "That was as good a 15 minutes of basketball you could hope to play on a day like today against a team like that."

Maya Moore added 20 points for the Huskies, who have the second-longest winning streak in women's basketball history. They're 14 short of the NCAA and school record set from 2001-03.

UConn (17-0, 5-0 Big East) has been at its best against top-10 teams during the streak, winning those 10 games by nearly 27 points a game.

"The gap is huge," Notre Dame coach Muffet McGraw said. "I think that they are on a mission to prove that gap is wider and wider with every game."

Devereaux Peters scored 12 to lead the Irish (15-1, 2-1), who had been off to the second-best start in school history. Notre Dame started 23-0 en route to the 2001 national title.

NO. 2 STANFORD 66, WASHINGTON 51

Nnemkadi Ogwumike had 20 points and 13 rebounds and the host Cardinal (15-1, 5-0 Pac-10) held off the scrappy Huskies (8-8, 3-3) for their 38th straight home victory at Maples Pavilion.

Kayla Pedersen added 14 points and five assists for Stanford, which played for the first time this season without point guard Jeanette Pohlen (right ankle sprain).

The Cardinal committed 17 turnovers but still did enough right to earn its eighth straight win in the series and 12th in 13.

NO. 14 XAVIER 73, LA SALLE 47

Amber Harris had 16 points and 11 rebounds, four teammates scored in double figures, and the visiting Musketeers (12-3, 2-0 Atlantic 10) went on a 36-15 run to build a 45-22 halftime lead in cruising past the Explorers (4-13, 0-3).

Andrea Riley scored 31 points for her 75th straight game scoring in double digits, helping the host Cowgirls (15-2, 3-0 Big 12) win their 11th straight with a victory over the Wildcats (10-7, 2-1).

NO. 17 WISCONSIN-GREEN BAY 74, WISCONSIN-MILWAUKEE 53

Julie Wojta had 20 points and 11 rebounds and the visiting Phoenix (16-0, 5-0 Horizon Conference) opened the second half with an 18-6 run in routing the Panthers (6-10, 1-4) to extend their Horizon Conference winning streak to 35 games.

NO. 21 TEXAS 95, TEXAS TECH 90

Brittainey Raven scored 20 points, hitting two free throws with 26 seconds left in the second overtime for a 94-90 lead as the Longhorns (12-5, 1-2 Big 12) fought off the Red Raiders (13-4, 1-2).

NO. 22 TCU 80, SAN DIEGO STATE 63

Helena Sverrisdottir scored 22 points, Emily Carter added 21 and the Lady Frogs (13-4, 3-1 Mountain West) rolled to their 16th straight home win since last season by ending the Aztecs' (11-5, 3-1) seven-game winning streak.

NO. 24 GEORGETOWN 60, LOUISVILLE 56

Sugar Rodgers scored 13 points and the host Hoyas (15-2, 4-0 Big East) blew a 16-point second-half lead, but made four consecutive free throws in the final minute to turn back the Cardinals (10-7, 2-2). The Hoyas, who forced 30 turnovers in the game, led 41-25 early in the second half.

HAWAI'I-HILO 64, BYU-HAWAI'I 60

Hina Kimitete hit two free throws with 45 second to break a 58-all tie and Kayce Kirihara made four free throws in the final 25 seconds to lift the host Vulcans (4-11, 1-3) over the Sesiders (4-9, 0-3) in a Pacific West Conference game.

Kimitete and Natalie Mata each scored 16, and Kirihara added 10 for UHH. Richelle Fenenbock scored 26 points, and Mahina Gago and Kristen Hartley each added 10 for BYUH.
