Brookings says 74,545 on Oahu are below poverty line

The number of people living below the poverty line on O�ahu was 74,725 in 2008, according to a new report from the Brookings Institution.

The report said the 39,298 poor who lived in Honolulu�s metropolitan area represented 10.8 percent of the population.
The 35,427 who lived in the city�s suburbs were 6.8 percent of the population.
The numbers ballooned when a broader definition of low income was applied. It measures the number of people who are below twice the federal poverty limit.
Brookings said about 24 percent of Honolulu�s metropolitan population were classified as low income in 2008.
