The 17-year-old boy who was killed Saturday night when his speeding moped ran a stop sign and hit a station wagon at the intersection of Lowrey Avenue and Manoa Road, was identified by his family today.

This morning, the family identified the victim of the crash as their son, Gerald Baltazar. The 17-year-old Kalihi youth, a Farrington High School senior, was killed when his moped hit a station wagon at the intersection of Lowrey Avenue and Manoa Road at 10:05 p.m.
His family said he loved mopeds. Today Baltazar’s parents, Ernesto and Divina Baltazar, came to the crash site. Baltazar has two brothers and two sisters, said his sister, Mary, 23.
Police said the Kalihi youth was not wearing a helmet at the time of the accident.
According to a police report: the boy on the moped was heading west in the east-bound lane of Oahu Avenue, next to another moped that was also traveling west, but in the proper lane.
A 26-year-old man in a station wagon was driving west on Lowrey at the same time. The man reached the intersection of Lowrey and Manoa Road, and attempted to turn left onto Manoa Road.
At that point the mopeds went into the intersection and ran a stop sign, police said. The 17-year-old's bike crashed into the station wagon. The other moped driver avoided the collision.
The 17-year-old, who was not wearing a helmet, was thrown from his moped. He was pronounced dead at The Queen's Medical Center.
No one else was injured.
Police said speed was a factor.
