Crews began work this morning to break up two boulders that crashed into a Kalihi Valley public housing complex last week.

Workers drilled holes in the boulders to create faults, then used jackhammers to split it into pieces small enough to be carted away
The boulders came down Friday morning on the Kalihi Valley Homes complex. The larger of the two — about 8 feet in diameter — stopped short while the second struck a unit and crushed an appliance.
No one was hurt, but nine families were displaced as state officials tried to determine whether other boulders on the hillside above the apartments posed a risk.
The boulders came from an area owned by the Honolulu Board of Water Supply, and the agency hired an engineering firm to assess the hillside and a contractor to remove the boulders.
