All nine Honolulu City Council members voted Wednesday for a resolution urging the city Salary Commission to not give them raises.

Council members cited the anticipated $140 million shortfall in the city operating budget as the reason for their position.
They each make about $52,000 annually, except the chairman who makes several thousand more. They last got a raise in 2008.
The commission had its first meeting of the year Wednesday. Its role is to make salary recommendations for elected city officials and top administrative officials by May 1 each year.
State lawmakers were criticized last year after they got a 36 percent raise that took effect in January. It was their first substantial raise in several years.
