Rainbow Wahine defeat San Jose State
Keisha Kanekoa scored 12 points to lead the Rainbow Wahine basketball team to a 63-49 win over San Jose State in a Western Athletic Conference game tonight at the Stan Sheriff Center.
With the win in front of a crowd of 578, Hawai‘i (8-12, 2-5 WAC) moves into sixth place in the WAC standings. Only the top eight teams in the nine-team conference qualify for the WAC Tournament in March. Leilani Galdones and Julita Bungaite added in nine points each for the Rainbow Wahine.
Chasity Shavers scored 16 points, Sayja Sumler had 11 and Samantha Marez added in 10 points for last-place San Jose State (5-13, 1-4 WAC)
Hawai‘i started the game with a 14-2 run. San Jose State then scored the next five points, but Hawai‘i answered with an 18-2 run to lead 32-9 after Allie Patterson’s free throw with less than six minutes remaining.
Chasity Shavers hit a 3-pointer with 4:47 remaining to end a four-plus minute scoring drought for the Spartans, who were just 4 of 21 from the field in the first half and had 11 turnovers. Hawai‘i, which shot 50 percent from the field, led 37-13 at halftime.
