PHILADELPHIA — Veteran pitcher Jose Contreras has finalized a $1.5 million, one-year contract with the Philadelphia Phillies.
The 38-year-old right-hander went a combined 6-13 with a 4.92 ERA in 28 games last year with the Chicago White Sox and Colorado Rockies. Contreras started 23 games, but will be used mainly as a reliever in Philadelphia.
Signed as a free agent by the New York Yankees in 2003, Contreras is 71-63 with a 4.61 ERA in 191 games, including 175 starts, for the Yankees, White Sox and Rockies.
Contreras helped the White Sox win the World Series in 2005, going 15-7 with a 3.61 ERA in the regular season and 3-1 with a 3.09 ERA in four postseason starts.
