Warriors outlast UC Irvine in five sets

No. 9 Hawai‘i ran out to a two-set lead, then held off five match points in the fifth set to defeat No. 7 UC Irvine, 30-28, 30-20, 27-30, 26-30, 20-18, in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation men's volleyball tonight at the Stan Sheriff Center.

Freshman Jonas Umlauft had 37 kills for the Warriors, who improved to 5-3 overall and 3-2 in the MPSF. UC Irvine is 5-5 and 1-4. The two teams play again tomorrow night.
In the fifth set, UC Irvine took an 18-17 lead, on a kill by Carson Clark, who finished with 29 kills. The Warriors held off their fifth match point on a Umlauft kill. Another kill by Umlauft gave UH a 19-18 lead and a block by Joshua Walker and Matt Rawson of a Clark attack gave the Warriors the victory.
UH hit .375, while UC Irvine hit .305 The teams combined for 51 service errors, including 26 by the Warriors.
The two teams played a tight first set with neither taking more than a three-point lead. The Anteaters led 28-27, but the Warriors scored the final three points on a Umlauft kill and two hitting errors by UC Irvine.
The Warriors easily took the second set, never trailing after taking a 5-4 lead.
In the third set, UH went out to a 5-0 lead behind the serve of Njec Zemliak, but UC Irvine was able to come back to take its first lead at 15-14. The set was last tied at 24 with UC Irvine taking the lead for good on a kill by Clark.
The Anteaters rolled to a 5-1 lead in the fourth set and were never challenged.
