It's less than a week away from national letter of intent signing day and some of Hawai'i's top football recruits are still undecided.

Kahuku All-State defensive lineman Kona Schwen-ke, who earlier verbally committed to Brigham Young, is taking recruiting trips to Notre Dame and Washington this weekend, his father, McKay Schwen-ke, said yesterday.

While taking trips after verbally committing would constitute a "soft verbal," it's not in Schwenke's case. McKay Schwenke said BYU coaches said if his son took the trips this weekend, it would revoke its offer. He understands and accepts the consequences, he added.

"Some schools frown on that, kids taking other visits (after verbally committing)," McKay Schwenke said.

Notre Dame, which recently hired Brian Kelly as head coach, offered Schwenke early this week. He and Punahou safety Jeremy Ioane left yesterday afternoon for the South Bend, Ind., campus. McKay Schwenke was told that Notre Dame would be employing a 3-4 defensive alignment, which Kahuku used this past season.

McKay Schwenke said his son also had offers from Oregon State, Nevada-Las Vegas and Hawai'i.

Schwenke also is visiting Washington this weekend. The Huskies already have a verbal commitment from fellow Kahuku defensive end Hauoli Jamora, The Advertiser's Defensive Co-Player of the Year.

Outside of UH, Washington has made the biggest impact locally with verbal commitments from Jamora, Waialua lineman Micah Hatchie, Mililani all-purpose player Taz Stevenson and 'Aiea defensive lineman Lawrence Lagafuaina. Lagafuaina is an example of a soft verbal because he is making a visit to UH this weekend.

Other players still undecided are Farrington defensive lineman V.J. Fehoko, Kapolei linebacker Shaydon Akuna, 'Iolani defensive lineman Sealii Epenesa and Punahou defensive lineman Sani Fuimaono.

The first day players may sign binding national letters of intent is Wednesday.
