Candlemas, which marks "The Presentation of Christ in the Temple" as a baby, will be observed with a sung Eucharist (communion service) 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Episcopal Cathedral of St. Andrew.

Candlemas (or Candle Mass) also refers to a traditional practice whereby a priest would bless beeswax candles for use throughout the year, distributing some to the faithful for use in the home. The public is welcome to bring their own candles to be blessed.

BUDDHIST MASTER FORCED TO CANCEL APPEARANCE

Dzogchen Khenpo Choga Rinpoche, Tibetan Buddhist master and lineage holder of the Dzogchen tradition, has canceled his appearance at this weekend's teaching retreat in Honolulu "due to unforeseeable last-minute circumstances," organizers said.

In his place are two teachers: Tibetan Buddhist Dzogchen monk Upaska Bodhisattva Orgyen Zangpo and Upaska Bodhisattva Drimed Dorje.

A local retreat session is scheduled to take place from 10 a.m. to noon and 1 to 3 p.m. today at the Friends (Quakers) Meeting House, 2426 O'ahu Ave. in Mānoa.

ST. MICHAEL'S HOLDING 4TH ANNUAL JAZZ FESTIVAL

St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church in Līhu'e will host its fourth annual All Angels Jazz Festival Feb. 5- 7 at the church.

The 7 p.m. Friday concert features Grammy-winning guitarist Jeff Peterson, of Honolulu, with acclaimed vocalist Chrysta Bell, from Los Angeles.

The Saturday 7 p.m. concert features Hawai'i jazz great Azure McCall, and Horace Alexander Young of Washington state on flute, saxophone and vocals.

Special guests for both concerts include percussionist Abe Lagrimas Jr., keyboardist Paul English and bass player Dean Taba.

The standing-room-only Jazz Masses, set for 8 and 10:30 a.m. Feb. 7, will offer "A Tribute to Mahalia Jackson," celebrating the 50th anniversary of her Newport Jazz Festival appearance in the late 1950s.
