UW's Lawrie wins 2nd softball player of year award

Associated Press

SEATTLE — Washington pitcher Danielle Lawrie has been named national softball player of the year for the second consecutive time.

Huskies spokesman Jeff Bechthold confirmed the award to The Associated Press on Tuesday evening. Lawrie is only the second player ever to repeat as national softball player of the year.

Lawrie is 40-3 with a 1.00 ERA and a school-record 24 shutouts. It's the second 40-win season in Washington history. She won 42 last year.

Her 1,843 career strikeouts are the most in Pac-10 history and fourth-most in NCAA history.

The defending national champion Huskies are in Oklahoma preparing for another Women's College World Series.
