Aiona promoting summer job program for teens

Lt. Gov. James "Duke" Aiona is urging nonprofit groups to enroll in a summer youth employment program and take on young workers through Sept. 30.

The state departments of Labor and Industrial Relations and Human Services are enrolling state agencies in the program.

Nonprofits interested in the program can attend an informational briefing at the state Capitol auditorium today starting at 2:30 p.m.

Young people ages 14 through 23 who are interested in the program should apply as soon as possible at their nearest state Workforce Development Division Office, an arm of the Department of Labor and Industrial Relations.

"This program helps our young people earn money and gain valuable work experience at a time when many state agencies and non-profits are short-staffed due to layoffs and funding restrictions," Aiona said in a news release.
