Firefighters rescue pair after catamaran overturns
Hawai'i County fire rescue personnel rescued two people Monday after their catamaran overturned off the Big Island.
Firefighters responded to a call at 10 a.m. and the department's Chopper 1 helicopter located the 16- to 18-foot catamaran about five miles offshore from the Papa'ikou/Onomea area.
Two people clinging to the hull were brought to Hilo Harbor by the fire department's rescue boat.
Firefighters said no one was injured.
They said the catamaran was lost. They estimated its value at $5,000.
