Dylan Clay defeated Brandon Wolff to win the X-1 welterweight world championship in the main event of the X-1 World Events "Nations Collide" mixed martial arts card late Friday night at the Blaisdell Center Arena.

Clay, a former Maui resident who now resides in Colorado, won it with a kimura arm-lock submission, 4 minutes, 6 seconds, into the third round. It was scheduled for five 5-minute rounds.

Clay improved to 8-2; Kailua's Wolff, who was making his first defense of the title, dropped to 7-5.

The action was halted briefly midway through the first round after Wolff received an inadvertent poke in the right eye. He told the doctors he could continue, but the eye appeared to swell shut later in the round.

The eye injury appeared to affect Wolff's performance the rest of the way.

Clay dropped Wolff midway through the third round with a series of strikes, then finished it with the arm-lock.

The co-feature of the card was the quarterfinals of an eight-man tournament in the light-heavyweight (205 pounds) division.

Po'ai Suganuma of Hilo advanced to the semifinals with a unanimous decision over Washington's Greg Schmitt.

In the other quarterfinals: Roy Boughton of California beat Maui's Adam Akau in the first round with a choke submission; Vitaly Shemetov of Russia

defeated Japan's Shungo Oyama with a first-round knockout; Sang Soo Lee of South Korea defeated Arizona's Daniel Madrid via second-round knockout.

The semifinals will be completed at the next X-1 event in September, and the final is scheduled for November.

Russell Doane defeated Riley Dutro via first-round TKO to highlight the undercard. Doane dropped Dutro with a punch, then followed with numerous strikes, prompting the referee to stop the bout, 4:33 into the first round.

Doane was awarded the X-1 organization's state championship in the 135-pound division.

In another undercard bout, Myles Tynanes was awarded a victory by disqualification against Satoshi Ishii of Japan.

Ishii was disqualified for landing several punches on Tynanes after the horn sounded to end the first round. Ishii won a gold medal in judo at the 2008 Olympics.
